Steve Burton
Hear Me Out>
Steve Burton clears up a few misconceptions about Jason!
If you frequent the message boards, Jason Morgan has been called a few
unpleasant "things" lately — "Sonny’s bitch."
"Droid." "Michael Jackson wannabe"! And, frankly, all those
monikers have some element of truth to them. Steve Burton sits down with us at
Soaps In Depth and confronts the issues that are leaving some fans up in arms.
Oh, Baby, Baby!
Is Jason falling for Sam? Or is he merely transferring his burning desire to be
a daddy to the geographically closest expectant mother aka Ms. McCall?
Considering Jason’s unwavering and selfless role as surrogate parent to Michael
all these years combined with his offer to step in as baby Lila’s father when
she is born, it can be interpreted that Jason is in dire need of therapy.
"That’s the fine line that Jason is walking, at this point," admits
Burton, who is the first to admit that something is amiss with his character. "He’s
fathering everybody else’s kid but his own! At some point, it’s got to stop.
It’s starting to look a little weird. I feel like telling Jason, ‘Have your own
kid, buddy, and leave everyone else’s alone!’"
Rules Of Attraction
Considering falling in love first then having a family hasn’t worked, maybe
Jason should try it the other way around. It breaks his heart, knowing that he
and Courtney can’t be together anymore. Love, after all, is a distraction that
he cannot afford. But now his preoccupation with the tots in Port Charles is
getting him in trouble with fans of the Jason/Courtney pairing who are
concerned that his romantic attention is going elsewhere. But Burton assures
Journey fans differently. "It’s all about the baby, not Sam," Burton
says. "It has to be. That’s the only way I can play it. It’s all about
this kid. Our relationship hasn’t evolved enough for me to really care about
her immensely. We pick our moment where you can tell we’re connecting. He wants
her to stay because he wants the baby to be okay. I don’t know if I trust her
actions as a mother if she were to leave. That’s the bottom line. I just want
the baby to be safe."
Room For Improvement
Yet again, Jason is giving up his own wants and needs to take care of someone
else. He may be one of the macho men on television, but Jason’s inclination to
martyr himself is wearing thin for some GH fans. Although Burton agrees that
his character needs to be more selfish sometimes, don’t expect him to be
putting Sonny in his place anytime soon. As Burton sees it, Sonny is his family
and whatever Sonny needs, Jason will be there to support him. "You can’t
deny that Jason would do anything for anybody he loves," says Burton.
"The fans know that I wouldn’t turn on Sonny. Trust me, [the show has]
tried. They want conflict. What better conflict than for Jason and Sonny to
fight over somebody or a woman or something or me to betray him? But we can’t
let that happen just because that’s one relationship [the fans] know. I won’t
ruin that for them." —Rosemary A. Rossi
