Chapter 13:

Courtney ran the wooden brush through her soft blonde hair several times before she placed it back on the counter. She stepped out of her pants and lifted her shirt up over her head and then reached into Jason’s shower and turned the knob. Warm water slowly filled the tub as Courtney placed herself in the water. She leaned back and relaxed, letting the warmth of the water overtake her. After shampooing her hair gently, Courtney rubbed soap around her body and rinsed off. She lay in the tub for a few more minutes and enjoyed the refreshing bath. She toweled off as much of her hair as she could and then wrapped a fluffy towel around herself. She returned to the bedroom and slipped into some clothes for days.

Dressed in a pair of dark jeans, and a cute red tank-top, Courtney made her way down the hall and tapped lightly on Jason’s door. She received no answer, so she turned the knob and peeked her head into the dark room. A smile lit up on her face as she gazed at his sleeping form. He was wearing nothing but a pair of black boxers, though a dark blue sheet covered most of his body. Courtney shut the door quietly behind her, deciding not to wake Jason, and walked down to the kitchen. She fixed herself a piece of toast and stood in front of the window, watching the sun as it rose in the early morning hours.

She finished her toast and wrapped her arms tightly around her stomach. “Good morning baby,” she whispered, “Everything all right in there?” Courtney smiled to herself, envisioning the day she would finally hold her child close to her.

A pair of strong arms wrapped themselves around a startled Courtney. “Good morning beautiful,” Jason whispered in her ear.

Courtney sighed, realizing who it was, and settled into his arms. “Good morning handsome,” she replied. She turned her head and looked up at him, giving him a broad smile. She brought her face closer to his and initiated a good morning kiss. She ran her hands up and down Jason’s back as his lips met hers. He placed his hands on her face and deepened the kiss, opening her mouth and slipping his tongue in. As the kiss progressed, he brought his hands down to her hips and pulled her body closer to his. He moved away from her mouth and gently left a trail of kisses down her neck. Reluctantly, Courtney broke away from him and rested her forehead against his. She fought to keep herself from looking at his lips and kissing him again. “Jason...”

“I-I didn’t mean to take it so far,” he interrupted quietly.

“No,” she replied, “I-I wanted to, but I’m not ready to, we can’t-”

“-lose control.” God, her eyes were so intoxicating.

“I like it when we kiss.” Courtney blushed a little, hearing this from herself. “So don’t-don’t ever stop.”

“I won’t.”

“Good.” They both stared at each other for a minute.

“Does this mean that I can kiss you again right now?”

Courtney nodded shyly and giggled at the fact that he’d asked permission.

He brought his mouth to hers for the final time and caressed her lips with his. “I love you.”

“We love you too,” Courtney said, patting her still flat stomach. “Isn’t that right baby?”

Jason smiled and placed his hands on her stomach. He loved the idea that their child was growing inside of her perfect body. That one day soon, the baby would come into the world... their own little miracle.

“Michael! Hold still!” Carly reprimanded as she struggled to pull a T-shirt over her fidgety son.

“When are Aunt Courtney and Uncle Jason gonna be here?” he questioned anxiously.

“Michael, you asked me that two minutes ago and what did I say?”

“Soon.” Mikey frowned. “Why can’t they come now?”

“Because!” Carly said impatiently as she finally managed to pull the T-shirt over his head.

“Sorry mommy,” the red-haired boy replied as he reached over and gave her a hug.

Carly ran her fingers through his hair, trying to smooth out some of the unruliness before Jason arrived to pick him up. “It’s okay sweetie.” Just then there was a knock at the door. Michael bolted from his bedroom and ran down the stairs. “Slow down!” Carly yelled after him, though she was pleased that he was so eager to spend time with his Aunt and Uncle.

“Uncle Jason! Uncle Jason!” Michael said excitedly, nearly jumping on top of Jason.

“Hey buddy!” he said. “You ready to go?”

“He has been for about two hours,” Carly said, laughing. “How are you Jason?”

“Just fine,” he answered honestly. He turned his focus back to Michael. “Courtney’s still across the hall, should we go get her?”

“Yes!”

Carly smiled at the two of them together, playing like two little kids. Jason’s accident had changed him and severely weakened their friendship, seeing as how Jason couldn’t remember anything... and not having Jason in her life was hard, and it hurt like hell, but Carly found some comfort in the fact that Michael had touched Jason. Gone was the Jason that Carly had grown to depend on, but at least she still had the Jason who loved Michael. Maybe someday he’d remember it all, but for now, Carly would have to bury the hurt and be content to live without her best friend by her side.

“Bye mommy!”

“Have fun!” Carly shut the door behind them and sighed as she walked back into the house.

Inside of the penthouse, Courtney hurried to finish getting ready. Jason would be back with Michael any minute. She heard the door open below and ran her fingers through her hair once more. She ran down to greet them. “Michael!” she beamed.

“Aunt Courtney!” Michael ran to the stairs and jumped into Courtney’s outstretched arms, giving her a big hug. “I’ve missed you!”

“Yea, me too sweetie,” Courtney responded. “But you’re gonna get to see me a lot more now because... guess what?”

“What?”

“I’m living right here. Across the hall from you!”

“Yay!”

Courtney smiled at Jason who was standing a few feet behind them. “So where are we going?”

“Well, it’s up to Michael,” Jason responded.

“Can we go to the zoo?”

“The zoo?” Jason questioned. “Whatever you want. I don’t know how to get there, but I bet Courtney does.”

“Yup,” she replied, “So let’s go.” She grabbed Michael’s hand and Jason took her other hand. This gesture didn’t go unnoticed by the little boy, who just grinned.

~*~

“Here we are!” Courtney announced, but she wasn’t sure that she’d been heard. Jason and Michael had spent the whole car ride laughing in the back seat. “Heellllooo?”

“Yes, Aunt Courtney?” Michael responded attempting to suppress his giggles. Jason looked guiltily at Courtney, who was pretending to look mad. “What?!”

“It seems you two haven’t realized that we’ve arrived.”

“Right,” Jason responded. “Come on Michael.” He hopped out of the car with Michael right behind him and headed toward the zoo’s entrance.

“What do you want to see first?” Courtney asked, grabbing Michael before he ran off.

“Ummm…. Can we ride the train?”

“Ok… This way!” She and Jason led Michael toward the ticket booth where they bought three tickets. Jason pressed the tickets inside of his hands and headed off toward the “station.”

Ten minutes later, all three of the giggling passengers were squeezed into a two-person seat. Jason, however, didn’t mind at all because it meant that he had an excuse to sit closer to Courtney. He put his arm around her and she snuggled closer to him. Michael sat next to them, pointing at all the different animals.

“Oo!” Courtney said excitedly. “Look it’s my favorite animal! The swans! What do you think of them, Michael?”

“They’re so pretty!”

Throughout the ride, Jason wasn’t paying much attention to the animals… he enjoyed it better when he watched the beautiful woman beside him. “Your hair smells good,” he told her.

Courtney smiled at him before answering. “It’s your shampoo, you know.” Her words were interrupted because Michael was tugging at her shirt.

“Aunt Courtney! Aunt Courtney! Look! It’s the elephants.”

“Yup. The last animal we’ll get to see on the ride!”

After the train ride and about 50,000 animals later, the three-some ended up at the nursery, where a few baby animals had just been born. “Aren’t they beautiful?” the blonde asked.

“Yes!” Michael gazed at the baby chicks. “You know my mommy and daddy are gonna have a new baby soon.”

Jason glanced at Courtney who was beaming. “Yes, we know,” he said, “And guess what else?”

“What?”

“That baby’s gonna have a little friend to play with….”

“Really?!” the small boy questioned eagerly.

“Mmhmm… a little cousin,” Courtney interjected.

It took Michael a few seconds to figure out what Courtney meant, but when he did, his eyes grew wide and he jumped into the air. “Aunt Courtney! Uncle Jason! You’re having a baby TOO?” he nearly shouted.

“Shhh… not so loud,” Courtney said sweetly. “And yes, we are.”

Jason squeezed Courtney’s hand and unexpectantly decided to pull her into a quick kiss.

“Yuck!” Michael interrupted. “Mommy and daddy always do that.”

“Because that’s what Mommies and Daddies are supposed to do,” Jason joked.

“Does this mean that you and Courtney are in love and going to get married?”

Both adults stared blankly at him, as red began to creep onto their cheeks.

“Maybe,” they both stammered, trying hard not to look at each other.

“Oh,” Michael replied disappointedly.

Courtney peered nervously at Jason from under her blonde locks. Luckily, she thought, he wasn’t looking at her. Even she could feel the hotness of her cheeks and the stickiness in her throat, so she could only imagine what she looked like on the outside. She tried desperately to cover up her emotions and to think of something to say to him, but Michael’s words kept echoing in her mind. Married. Married. With Jason Morgan she’d thought a few times about their future together, about the times that they would share, and how they would be together forever. Perhaps she had even thought of marrying Jason Morgan someday, but one thing was for certain, she hadn’t been ready to be a married woman again. She’d married AJ hastily, naively, and innocently, and she wasn’t going to let herself get hurt again. And now here it was happening all over again… she’d lost the man that she had given her heart to. It didn’t matter that losing AJ had been for very different reason, but the hurt and the pain was still there. She had become stronger after her break-up with AJ, so what was stopping her now?

Of course Courtney was beginning to find love with the new Jason, and she recognized it as love, but it wasn’t the same kind of love as she’d felt towards him before the accident. Was it the same love that had made her fight for him with everything that she had? Was this new Jason really the one? She’d been so sure that Jason Morgan had been the one, and then he was taken from her. The thought of a marriage to this living and breathing Jason had never crossed her mind, and after contemplating it, Courtney decided that she had enough to worry about with the baby coming. She didn’t need a marriage to commit to and a wedding to plan. No, things were better off as they were. She and Jason were getting along fine… and a marriage would not only complicate things for her, but also for him. She loved him, but was it what she really wanted? And how could she be sure that he really loved her? If she hadn’t become pregnant, Courtney was sure that she and Jason would not have moved things along so quickly. She was still hurting, and in a way, he was helping her heal, but once the hurt was gone, perhaps there wouldn’t be anything left. Except the child… the child who symbolized the true love she and Jason Morgan had felt for one another.

“Jason?” she finally managed to say.

Lost in thought, Jason didn’t hear Courtney speak. Michael’s words had struck him in a way that very few people had managed to do in the life he could remember. Marriage? Is that what Courtney expected of him? The very word scared Jason. Everything was new to him… as far as his memory went, he had never dated a girl before, and she was the first woman he’d ever had what he thought were real feelings for. He didn’t want to hurt her, and he didn’t want to disappoint her, but marriage was not something that he was ready for. He hadn’t even known Courtney for two months, and already he was faced with this decision. But maybe it wouldn’t be so bad… they had a child together, after all. And they lived together. What difference would it make? He shook his head and ran a single hand through his tousled brown hair. Marriage? Is that what she wanted? Hell, he wasn’t even completely sure that Courtney wanted to love him. Something in the back of his mind nagged at him, telling him that the only reason Courtney wanted to be with him was for the sake of their child. Maybe she didn’t really love him… maybe she only wanted to be with him because of the child.

“Jason?” Courtney said again, louder this time.

He snapped out of his mood and stared at her. Jason tried to read her… to look into her eyes and know for sure that she loved him completely. Loving her was the only thing in his life that he needed… he knew he loved her. He loved her with everything that he had. As he stared into her crystal blue eyes, a new emotion became apparent. One he hadn’t seen in her eyes before. It tore harshly at his heartstrings and made him look away. Did she really love him?

A/N: I’m taking a leap of faith by posting this. The chapter is short, but intense, dark and extremely graphic (and not in an NC-17 or violent sense). I’m warning you. If you start to get to the upsetting part and think that you’re not going to be able to handle it, I’m begging you, please don’t put yourself through it. Putting my pain into my writing has helped me heal... and I know that the pain is really evident in this particular chapter. I’m not trying to upset you, I’m trying to depict life as real as it is at its worst points. That being said, please be aware of your emotions as you read. The last thing that I want to do is deeply hurt someone...

Chapter 14: (Rated R for its Graphic Nature)

The light of the stars shone through the window into the darkened room. She wrapped the blanket more tightly around her frail body, protecting herself. From what she did not know. She couldn’t sleep, the memory of the day filling her mind. Courtney had barely spoken to Jason since Michael had asked his fateful question. They had dropped Michael off and come straight home. She had dropped her keys onto the table, refusing to look him in the eyes, and headed upstairs to the quietness of her room. And now alone, she felt restless and useless. After tossing and turning for what seemed like days, but couldn’t have been more than an hour, Courtney had pulled the curtains away from the window and had stared out into the sky. There were millions of tiny stars that filled the endless night, but she didn’t want to look at them. She wanted to be in the darkness and shut off the light that was trying to find her. Sighing, she pulled the curtains together and flopped back onto the bed. She closed her eyes, hoping that the sleep would come, or maybe instead, the dreams would.

“Jason!” she cried, calling out his name frantically. “I can’t find you, Jason.”

Silence filled the empty space.

She continued on, searching through the darkness. Where was he? He’d promised that he’d never leave her again…she yelled louder this time, hoping that he’d come to her. That he’d take her away from this misery.

And then as suddenly as she’d lost him, she found him. There he was… standing in the middle of the darkened room, looking down at the single candle in his hand. The flame was small, but bright and it lead her towards him. “Jason,” she said softly.

He didn’t look up at first, but after a moment, he lifted his head and stared right into her blue eyes.

She moved her feet closer to him. Slowly at first, then faster, but something stopped her. She couldn’t move any farther. Her feet were stuck, and when she tried to reach out to him, her hands became paralyzed.

“What’s happening?” she asked, her face stricken with fear.

He didn’t respond, but turned away from her, shielding the light from her weak body.

“Don’t leave me!” she whispered, but she knew he couldn’t hear her. “Help me, Jason!”

Without a single glance back, he continued forward. He lifted the white candle to his face, and blew sharply on the flame.

The light vanished.

Left in complete darkness, Courtney began to scream…

Suddenly aware of the screams that filled his ears, Jason bolted out of bed. He yanked the door open and flew down the hallway, stumbling over an empty laundry basket as he went.

“Courtney!” he said, shaking her awake the moment that he reached her side. Her eyes flew open and she sat up quickly. Tears fell down her cheeks as she continued shaking, though the screaming had stopped. Jason took the blonde beauty in his arms and gingerly ran his fingers through her hair. She tried to stifle the sobs that escaped from her lips, but he whispered that it was okay. He wrapped his arms around her strongly, rocking her back and forth. Jason placed a soft kiss on her forehead and brushed his thumb across her face, wiping away a few of her tears.

After a few minutes, Courtney had managed to quiet down, but that didn’t stop her body from trembling uncontrollably. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“Don’t be.” He laid back into the coldness of her sheets, keeping his arms around her as she settled into his chest.

“I shouldn’t have gotten so upset over a nightmare.”

“Shh.” He snuggled closer to her, sharing the warmth of his body.

She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep… almost feeling safe in his arms.

~*~

Though unnoticeable in the darkness, the blackened wood of the bed’s frame stood out against the room’s cream-colored walls, which seamlessly blended into the milky-white carpet. Blue cotton sheets were pulled tautly across the soft mattress, encircling the bed’s two occupants. Jason lay comfortably with his head on a pillow, while the woman he loved, slept with her head on his chest, and fear in her heart. Her dreams were filled with nothing but confusion and suffering, but still she slept on. She tried desperately to escape from their sinister plots, but everywhere that she turned, something just as horrifying appeared and drew her in. It wasn’t until the first terrible pain stabbed her abdomen that Courtney left her dreams and hurtled back into the harshness of reality. Her body had suddenly become stiff against his, strangely different from the moments she had shared with him in that bed after her nightmare. No thoughts entered her mind as she struggled to fight off the sharp pains, except for the realization that she needed to get herself out. Out of that room. Out of that bed. And most of all, out of his arms.

She was careful not to wake him as she maneuvered out of the bed. Quietly, she slipped out from under the sheets and placed her feet on the floor. She held in the whimpers of pain that threatened to burst from her lips, and instead, brought forth the memories… the memories of things better forgotten. Somehow her body carried her out of the dark room, while her mind wandered elsewhere…

Her blood-stained clothes lay heaped on the floor of the bathroom as she grabbed the counter and nearly pulled herself up. The strength of her body was almost gone, replaced by the excruciating pain in her abdomen. She curled herself into a tiny ball, preparing for what was to happen next. It was no use to try and stop it, but still, she desperately squeezed her legs together tightly. She attempted to close up her body and hang on, begging God to keep her baby safe. A sob of despair escaped her… the first sound she’d allowed herself to make since the pain had started. First one tear, then another, until her pale cheeks became the ground on which rivers flow. She continued to pray, asking Him to protect her child. The biggest wave of pain shook her body then, the life inside of her coming out with it.

Immediately, she felt the emptiness and the loneliness… and the utter despair of being incapable of saving what mattered most. The little life that she’d created and held inside of her was gone forever and she had allowed it to happen.

She slipped roughly to the ground and placed her head into her hands. She folded her knees against her chest as her body shook violently and the hurt from her loss engulfed her. Letting go of her hopes, she allowed the grief to take her to a place where pain is real and undeniable.

Not even the sound of the light in the hall being turned on, or the twisting of the doorknob could save her from being lost in the pain.

A/N: Same warning for this chapter. Another short, but intense one.

Chapter 15:

“Courtney?” a hoarse voice asked.

She didn’t look up at him. Didn’t even seem to notice him standing there. He stepped towards her, shakily reaching out to her with one hand.

“Don’t touch me,” came her icy, almost-whispered response. Her eyes clouded over as she forced the tears to stop and she buried herself deeper into her pain. She rocked her body back and forth, remembering the long journey down the hallway. If only she had held on...

***Flashback***

She left his room quickly, dragging her feet along and clutching her stomach as she went. She saw a plate of eggs come into focus as she continued on. The pain in her lower stomach had increased, causing her to clutch her shirt tightly, nearly ripping holes into the fabric. She saw his eyes looking into her soul, and felt the first spark between them come alive. The pain in her abdomen became unbearable and took away her ability to move properly. Her legs crumpled beneath her and her wretched figure fell to the floor. Terrified, she dug her nails into the rough carpet and pulled herself down the long hallway. She reached her hands out and grasped whatever she could, dragging her broken body across the coarse ground. She felt his lips against hers, the rain running through her hair and down her cheeks. There was a fire in his kiss that she couldn’t pull away from. As minute after minute of Courtney’s unbearable task worn on, she lost herself in her memories… He looked at her, devouring everything about her. She saw the hunger, the need… the want in his gorgeous eyes. Dinner had long been forgotten as their bodies and souls became one for the first time that beautiful night. The horrifying truth of what was happening abruptly hit her as she looked towards the bathroom with hurt-filled eyes. A single tear rolled down her cheek, while she continued to fight herself, to make her body do what she wanted it to. Instead, the pain controlled her thoughts and held hostage her right to choose… her right to protect the one thing in the world that she cared most about.

Her nails were broken and her hands were raw when she finally reached the bathroom door. She didn’t have the strength to reach up and turn the knob, to open the door that would lead to the greatest pain she’d ever known.

The contractions began then and she became aware of a miserable wetness between her legs. With one boost of inconceivable strength, she grabbed the handle and pushed open the heavy wooden door. Sliding herself across the cold floor, she turned her back to the outside and deliberately leaned back against the door. The click of the lock echoed in her mind… she was alone. Completely, and totally alone. Her fingers weakly grasped the material of her shirt as she struggled to pull it off of her aching body. A wave of pain washed over her, and she knew that she could no longer deny it. This was happening. It was real. Her soul was anguished as once more, a contraction came and the truth sunk in.

***End Flashback***

He needed to reach her. To get through to her. If she didn’t let him, Jason was afraid that he would lose her forever. “Courtney,” he said softly. He desperately wanted to hold her and to wipe away her tears, just as she had allowed him to do so earlier that night.

“You don’t understand,” she whispered. “I don’t even understand.”

Jason’s eyes traveled to the floor... and the blood that covered it and her clothes. His heart skipped a beat as the facts processed through his brain. She looked up just as the realization, along with the pain and the hurt, entered his eyes. Tears filled the corners of his eyes as he turned and looked away.

“You can’t even look at me,” she said, with an edgy bitterness in her voice.

He looked back at her, the expression on his face full of grief and despair. Breaking down in front of her was not what she needed. She needed him to be strong. With a deep breath, he took a step towards her and waited for her to object once more.

She didn’t.

“Courtney,” he spoke, his voice wavering and threatening to crack. “Let me help you.”

In order to protect herself from feeling more pain, she had put the walls up and refused to let herself lose it in front of him. But her heart could not keep her from staring directly into his deep blue eyes... She didn’t want to think about letting him in, about letting herself feel the pain. Thinking about anything at that moment was not what she wanted. She wanted to be rid of it all. Just to forget that it had ever happened and bury it deep inside of herself and never let it resurface. But somehow among the feelings of grief and hopelessness, she knew that she couldn’t bury the memory of her loss... she had to deal with it. And she couldn’t do it alone.

“I lost our baby, Jason.”

He stared into her pain-filled eyes for only a moment before looking away and swallowing his pain. “I know.”

Courtney rung her hands together, dragging her cracked nails across her broken skin. As if suddenly aware that he was really there, standing right in front of her, Courtney moved her hands in front of her body. She didn’t want him to look at her and see the emptiness; the emptiness that she felt inside. “I tried-I tried to hold on,” she explained desperately, though more to herself. How could she have allowed this to happen? “I didn’t-I-I’m sorry.”

He bit his lip, feeling the sorrow rise from his heart. A nearly stifled cry rippled throughout his body causing him to shake and slide roughly to the ground. Resisting the urge not to touch the sobbing woman-to reach out to her-Jason placed his head in his hands and lost all of his emotional control. Tears ran down his cheeks, as they never had before. Not even the accident and loss of memory had caused him so much pain. Already he felt the loss and the despair inside of his heart. It wasn’t possible for him to fathom Courtney’s feelings-to understand the pain of a mother who has lost her child forever.

She had never known this kind of pain before… the pain that comes when your heart hurts more than your body. Her cheeks were stained with tears, but her outward appearance had no comparison to the gaping hole that had been torn in her heart… a hole that was not capable of being completely healed. “Why?” she thought, “Why all this pain?

***Flashback***

“No,” had come as the first word in her grief. The air around her had been still and dead as she had turned to look into the mirror. She had stared into the empty eyes of a woman who had lost everything that mattered. She saw him looking at her from across the room. The hurt in his eyes so evident. “I want you back,” he’d said. Those were the words that she had waited to hear… had imagined for so long. And now he was here, offering himself to her. She ran towards him, kissing him, telling him that she needed him. She needed to feel him… and to know him. And so he took her away, giving her what they both needed. The face of the suffering woman in the mirror hadn’t belonged to her… it just couldn’t.

***End Flashback***

Although he was so close to her, he was so far away. She had pushed him away the moment that he’d tried to get close to her… but she knew in her heart that they should mourn, together, for their child. She watched as his body trembled from the pain and the utter darkness and knew that they couldn’t get through this without each other. Softly she touched his knee, sending a spark through both their bodies.

The moment that he felt her skin brush up against his, Jason knew what she meant… he understand that she needed him and he needed her. The loss of their child was devastating and hurt more than anything either of them had ever experienced. Afraid that she would change her mind, and shut him out again, Jason placed his arms around her trembling body and brought her close to him.

They lay there together in the darkness… their tongues silent, but their hearts beating loudly as one. Together, they grieved for their baby. Courtney’s body pressed into his, finding the place which seemed to have been made for her. Part of the loneliness in her heart had already left, but she still felt drowned in hopelessness. Her tears fell against his strong chest while she closed her eyes and drifted into a dreamless sleep.

He felt the pace of her breathing slow down and the steady rise and fall of her chest subside. Taking a strand of her blonde hair in his tired hands and moving it from her face, he placed a tender kiss on her forehead. “I love you,” he barely whispered, “Please don’t ever forget.”

~*~

Chapter 16:

The ground underneath of Jason’s body remained cold though he’d sat there for a few hours, holding his sad angel in his arms. He ran his smooth fingertips across her face and in between the delicate strands of her blonde hair, wiping the tears away as he did so. He felt the steady rhythm of her breathing and imagined what she looked like as she slept there in the darkness. It was impossible for him to fully understand her pain, but he tried to ease her burden and help carry the load. Jason noticed that the darkness that had surrounded her naked body had begun to lighten as rays of sunshine crept under the door of the bathroom. Forcefully, he closed his eyes, unwilling to become a witness to the state of the bathroom. He wouldn’t-couldn’t look at it and see what was there. Aware of her every movement, Jason felt Courtney curl tightly into his chest.

Praying that she wouldn’t wake up before he’d left the room, Jason made his decision. A decision which would protect her from more pain. He lifted her exhausted body and carried her out into the hall, holding her close to him. She stirred and opened her eyes slowly as she stared up at him.

“Jason?” she asked. What was this feeling inside of her? It felt like she’d lost something that meant the world to her. And then she remembered. Remembered the pain... and their terrible loss.

He watched her as the hurt came back into her eyes and her body became stiff once again. For a moment after she had awakened, it had seemed that she had relaxed and nearly forgotten. But how could she forget? Jason knew she never would. “Courtney... you need to let me take you to the hospital.”

She nodded blankly and then opened her eyes and stared into his. And it was in that moment that she once again released her pain and let it flow freely. She had seen something in his eyes that gave her the strength to share her pain with him. His eyes didn’t lie or hide the hurt-and now neither would she.

He placed his arms around her weak body and held her close to him, supporting all of her weight against his body. Down the stairs and into the front room he carried her. Although the air was chilly, Jason could feel Courtney shaking. He grabbed a blanket that lay draped over the couch and wrapped her body in it. The shaking stopped as he moved out into the hallway and down the elevator.

The warmth of the blanket and the feeling of being supported by a pair of strong arms comforted Courtney. The hurt was still there, but somehow, he made it easier. As if he knew exactly what she was feeling and how he could make it better. Jason would heal her just as she had helped him heal from the accident. Courtney closed her eyes once more and rested against him, feeling the bouncing of his feet as he gently carried her through the parking lot and into the car that was waiting for them.

“I love you,” she whispered before closing her eyes and passing out.

Jason reached the hospital rapidly, though he couldn’t recall exactly how. His body had simply moved on its own and had understood where to go and what to do. A nurse came up to him quickly, observing the stricken look on his face and the sate of the woman in his arms.

“Sir?”

He couldn’t make his mouth move. His lips wouldn’t form and the words wouldn’t come out. There was a look of pity in the nurse’s warm eyes.

“She needs medical attention,” he heard her say distantly. A soft hand touched his shoulder. Turning to look, his eyes met a familiar face.

“Jason?” Brenda asked more calmly than she felt. “Jason, listen to me. Courtney’s passed out. You need to let the nurse take her.” He nodded, but kept his tight grip on Courtney’s cold body. The nurse guided him to a private room as a doctor followed close behind.

“How long has she been out?” an official voice asked him after he gently placed her on the bed. The blanket he’d remembered to grab still lay draped over her frail body. He felt the brunette touch him once more, bringing him back into reality.

“Since-since-” Saying the words would make it all much more real.

He vaguely heard Brenda’s soft voice telling the doctor something, which included the word baby.

“We’re going to do everything that we can for her,” the doctor stated. “But you’ll need to go out and wait.”

Jason felt Brenda’s hand grasp his, leading him away. He followed but continued to stare at the mother of his only child.

“Jason, she’s going to be all right,” Brenda tried to say soothingly. “You’ll get to see her again soon.”

“She said she loved me.” That much he could process. But Courtney needed him to be stronger-to hold on and wait for her to be okay.

“And she meant it.”

“But loving something doesn’t always make it okay…” his voice cracked and he looked away. “Maybe I didn’t love our baby enough. If only I had-”

“Wishing that something hadn’t happened doesn’t do any good. Things happen, Jason. Things just happen.” Brenda’s eyes were wet as she studied his pain-filled face. “Don’t blame anyone or anything. There are things in this world, which we can’t change. There are things, which were never meant to be. And looking back and dwelling on those experiences doesn’t help. Moving on is a part of life.”

“I don’t want to just forget.”

“You don’t have to.”

Tears streamed down both Brenda and Jason’s cheeks as they looked at each solemnly. Brenda wrapped her arms around the friend she never dreamed that she’d have and cried with him. How long, she didn’t know, but she did know that he needed her and she would be there for him.

“You can sit with her,” the on-call nurse interrupted. “Courtney is awake now and has already been examined.”

Jason nodded.

Brenda watched as he shuffled quickly towards Courtney’s room. “He loves her so much,” she thought. A twinge of regret pinched her heart, but Brenda only exhaled and left the hospital.

Carly bounded into PH4 with a bright smile.

“Courtney! Jason!” she called enthusiastically.

Met by silence, Carly ventured farther into the home with a belly that was beginning to show. She glanced down at her tummy and smiled. She and Courtney would need to go maternity shopping soon.

Puzzled by the stillness and the eerie feel in the air, Carly stopped thinking about maternity clothes and started to worry about Jason and Courtney. Where were they? She tiptoed upstairs with the vague thought that maybe they were avoiding her. Yet, something drew her near the bathroom. She placed her fingers around the knob and slowly turned the handle. Somehow she already knew that what she was about to witness had changed both Jason and Courtney’s lives forever.

And it had.

Her eyes were wide with shock from the moment that the door had opened. Courtney didn’t deserve this. Jason didn’t deserve this. Why was God punishing them?

Nobody needed to tell Carly what had happened. She just knew-and she felt it in her heart. That same feeling that had come to her after AJ had pushed her down the stairs.

She was needed at the hospital. And she would go.

~*~

He wanted to ask her if she was okay. But he already knew the answer. What was he supposed to say to ease her pain?

“No matter how much I try. No matter how much I wish-Courtney-we can’t go back. No amount of pleading is going to bring our child back,” Jason began.

“I know,” came the nearly whispered response. “But it doesn’t make the hurt any easier… and Jason, I understand if you want to leave because it hurts too much or you don’t want to be with me. I accept that-”

“Don’t Courtney. We love each other. We can’t let this tear us apart. I’m going to fight for us, even when we both feel like giving up.”

Jason’s confession allowed Courtney to see a side of him that only the accident could have changed. He was going to fight for her. “Okay,” she said, a tight smile on her face. Jason slid off the stool and into the bed, placing his body next to Courtney’s. He held her as she rested, breaking through some of her pain.

Carly peeked into the room, surprised to see Courtney and Jason so close together. They were going to need each other more than ever.

~*~

“Jason?” Courtney’s soft voice interrupted his dreams of her.

“Yes?”

“Thank you. Thank you for being so understanding.”

“And thank you for giving me the chance to love you.”

She paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. “Before you came in Dr. Meadows examined me. And Jason… it hurt a lot. Not physically, but my heart hurt. And I was scared, but all I kept seeing in my mind was you with your arms outstretched, waiting to pull me in for a comforting hug.”

Jason kissed her forehead gently, allowing her to continue speaking.

“She said that-that there was no lasting damage. And that the miscarriage wouldn’t prevent me from having a family in the future. She said it was something that couldn’t have been predicted or prevented.” Her soul mate ran his fingers through her hair and pressed his head lightly against hers. She laced her fingers through his and managed a tiny smile. “I’m not ready for a family, and maybe that’s why I didn’t have this baby.”

He whispered softly, “It doesn’t matter why. It just matters that we hold onto the love we’ve found with each other.”

“We will, Jason, we will.”

~*~

Carly sat outside of the light-filled room. She could hear the faint murmur of their voices and knew that she shouldn’t interrupt. After a while, the talking died down and she decided to see them and then leave quickly. What had she been thinking?

Courtney saw her first as she popped her head in. It was a relief to see Carly’s familiar and loving face.

“I don’t want to intrude,” she said, barely stepping into the room.

Courtney shook her head. “You’re not.”

Taking the opportunity to excuse himself, Jason quietly left the room, but not before leaving a kiss on Courtney’s cheek.

“He thinks the world of you,” Carly said while she watched his eyes never leave Courtney’s face.

“I know.” Courtney smiled and Carly reached out and squeezed her hand.

“I love you like the sister that I never had,” Carly confessed. “And part of being a sister is being there when she hurts the moment.”

“So you know?”

Carly nodded. “It’s okay to be angry, sad and hurt, Courtney. It’s a part of the grief. But don’t shut any of us out, promise?”

“Promise.”

“So tell me how you’re really feeling? I know you’re dying inside, but you’re trying so hard not to hurt Jason and be strong for him.”

Courtney lowered her head as tears slipped down her cheeks. “I’m so afraid of losing him, just like I lost our baby.”

“You wont,” Carly spoke firmly. “Don’t let yourself believe that. You’re going to have days when all you can feel is guilt and hopelessness, but Courtney, never push him away and doubt Jason’s love for you.”

“Thanks,” her best friend responded sincerely. “… You’ve experience my pain too, Carly.”

“And I’m stronger for it. One day you will be too.”

Courtney sat up in her and hugged Carly tightly. Somewhere along the way they had become true sisters and Courtney would forever be grateful for Carly’s love and wisdom.

Chapter 17:

A quiet, almost nervous, giggle filled the hallway. The woman who had giggled brushed a strand of blonde hair out of her eyes as she clung tightly to the man who held her. He headed toward a chocolate-brown door whose features reflected the mood of the home that lay beyond it.

“Jason,” the blonde protested, “You can put me down now.”

“Not until we’re inside,” he responded, carefully opening the door and walking through the doorway. His arms were gentle and strong around her body as he carried her to safety.

“I’m all right now,” his woman explained once more. “Jason, I’m not going to break if you let me walk.”

“Courtney, the doctor said you need to rest.”

“And I will. Don’t worry so much!”

“Ok,” he conceded. “I promise not to worry… all the time.”

Courtney smiled at his comment while he set her down gently. Somehow he knew the right balance between protecting her and allowing her plenty of room to breathe at the same time. It was one of the many qualities that she loved about him… and a balance that he seemed to have grasped better after the accident. Painful though it was to return home after only a few days in the hospital, Courtney had been dealing with her loss as well as any woman was capable of. And Jason knew that.

Courtney placed her hand in Jason’s and took a deep breath before taking a thorough look around. At first sight, it was obvious that Carly had straightened things up around the penthouse while awaiting Courtney’s return home. The pillows were perfectly placed on the leather sofa and a warm blanket was neatly folded on top of the comfortable cushions. There were no loose balls scattered around the green felt of the pool table and each cue-stick leaned against the wall in a flawless line.

As her eyes scanned the rest of the room, Courtney kept silent. Her silence unnerved Jason a bit, but he held onto her hand tightly. He placed his hand on her shoulder and moved with her as she took a few steps toward the kitchen.

Carly had certainly been busy. There were no dishes in the sink, and in fact, the sink was spotless. Not to mention the counter, the tables and the floor which sparkled as though they’d been touched by an angel’s hand. Any remnants of Jason’s brownie mess were gone and replaced by the smell of Mr. Clean. Courtney could no longer withstand the impeccable conditions of the kitchen and it nearly made her sick. Sensing this, her boyfriend calmly led her out of the kitchen and onto the couch.

She still didn’t speak as she sat down on the cool material of the couch and stared at their intertwined hands. Jason knew better than to speak to her first… and patiently waited for her to clear her thoughts. He was confident that she’d open up to him when she was ready to, but until then, he wasn’t going to push. He felt her let out a tiny breath of air and turn to settle into his arms.

“Please hold me.” She felt him respond to her words immediately as he wrapped his arms snuggly around her. “Sometimes all I want to do is stay in your arms forever.”

“I’m not stopping you.” He gently pressed his lips to her forehead and massaged her hand, but he could feel her tense up.

“And that’s what scares me.”

“Courtney, why?”

She didn’t respond to him instantly, but took her time to find the right words. “Because you give your love to me so freely and yet, don’t expect anything in return.”

“That’s no reason to be afraid.”

“I know that.”

“Good.”

Across the hall, Carly lay flopped on the couch. Two and a half months into her pregnancy, she was already tired of being pregnant… and she hadn’t even started showing yet. Or even found out the baby’s sex. The more she thought about it, though, the more she realized that it was guilt that she felt. How could she feel so much joy for her child in the face of Jason and Courtney’s terrible loss? She and Sonny had waited a long time for their baby, but that didn’t mean that they were more deserving.

“Mommy?” Carly’s son asked while walking down the steps quietly. A worried expression hung on his face. “Why do you look so sad?”

“It’s nothing you have to worry about, honey.”

Michael climbed into his mother’s lap and gave her the kind of hug that only a child can. “Mommy, is the baby sad too?”

“I think maybe he or she is a little bit sad like mommy.”

“Why?” he asked with concern in his eyes.

Carly sighed and decided that Michael deserved to know what had happened, even if he had a hard time understanding. “Michael, sometimes things happen to babies while they’re still inside of their mommy’s tummy.” His eyes filled with fear as he listened, but his mother calmly rubbed his back. “A long time ago your dad and I had another baby, but this baby died before he was ever born.”

“Is that why you’re sad?”

“This new baby isn’t going to have a cousin, Michael. Jason and Courtney… lost their baby like mommy and daddy did a long time ago.”

“I don’t understand,” Michael said. “Why did the baby die?”

“We don’t know. Nobody knows… but it hurts all of us a lot and makes us sad, especially Jason and Courtney. Their hearts are hurting.”

Michael watched his mother gaze sadly at her hands. He curled up close to her and placed his hand on her stomach. “Our baby isn’t going to die, right?”

“No, honey, he isn’t. He’s healthy and strong.” Carly smiled tightly and played with Michael’s small hand. “But we can’t always choose how things will turn out.”

~*~

“Jason?”

“Mm?” he responded groggily, while rubbing his eyes.

“Can we go out tonight?” a soft voice asked sweetly.

He sat up and looked into the eyes of the woman who had spoken to him. “Are you sure?”

Courtney returned his gaze and nodded confidently. “Let’s go dancing.” She’d been trying to find the courage to ask him that nearly the entire time that they’d laid on the couch together.

Jason’s eyes became bigger than normal and he struggled to make coherent words escape his lips. “D-Dancing?”

“It’ll be fun,” Courtney said. She needed to get out and focus on something else besides the baby who plagued her every thought. It wasn’t as though she wanted to just forget, but she didn’t want to be bogged down by the terrible memories for the rest of her life. If she was going to move on, she needed to start right then and stop wallowing in her pain. And getting out of the house was what she needed.

“Courtney-we barely got here?”

“So?” she asked playfully as she swatted his chest. “Please? It’ll make me happy…”

He sighed, knowing he couldn’t refuse her when she asked so nicely. “Okay…”

“Thank you.” She stood up and stretched, lifting her arms and straightening them in the air. The dark blue fabric of her shirtsleeve clung tightly to her body, but left her belly slightly exposed.

Jason gave her bare midriff a disapproving, but playful, look and secretly, he wasn’t complaining. He grasped her hand tightly and gently pulled her with him as he walked up the steps to their bedrooms. It would be the first time that Courtney would see the place of her miscarriage and Jason knew that she’d need his support. “You okay?” he asked tenderly.

“When I’m with you… everything is better.”

Hand in hand, they walked past the door, which had previously led them to the greatest sorrow in their lives. They both briefly glanced at the seemingly peaceful doorway and continued on, gaining strength from each other.

“I’m okay,” Courtney whispered to no one in particular. “I’m okay.”

Jason wrapped his arms around her trembling body and embraced her tightly once they were inside of Courtney’s room. She broke their embrace and set lightly on the bed.

“I’ll leave you to get changed,” Jason said quietly, getting up from the soft sheets.

Courtney took a deep breath, but reached out her hand and grabbed his arm. “Don’t leave… just yet.”

He turned and walked back to her and then ran his thumb across her face and brushed the hair out of her eyes. Deciding that it was the right thing to do, Jason leaned over and placed a chaste kiss on her cheek. He began to pull away, but Courtney pulled him back to her and pressed her lips against his. They kissed for only a few moments before Courtney broke away from him. She rested her smooth forehead against his and stared into his eyes. “Okay, now you can go,” she told him, flashing a small smile.

Jason was reluctant to leave, but he nodded his head and quietly left the room. “Don’t take too long,” he teased as he walked through the doorway.

“I won’t keep you waiting longer than I need to,” the beautiful woman replied.

A dark, brooding man paced inside of the penthouse across the hall. “Carly!” he barked sharply.

Inside of the kitchen, Carly jumped. She hadn’t even heard the door open and he was already getting impatient with her. “What?” she asked angrily from the kitchen. She rubbed her hand across her forehead and attempted to smooth out some of the tangles in her hair before entering the front room. It had been one of her lazy days… she was still only dressed in dark blue pajama pants and a loose, cotton shirt. Her face was make-up free and the only one-time brushing of her hair that morning had ceased to be effective. Now, Michael was napping and apparently, her husband had just returned. At others times, she would have been overjoyed to see him home, safe and sound, but not now. He hadn’t returned any of her phone calls. She’d tried to reach him in desperation, but he hadn’t bothered to call and check up on what was happening.

She should have been used to it, yes. Sonny frequently left without any word but “goodbye,” if even that much, and somewhere along the way she had learned to grin and bear it. It’s all part of the package when you marry a mob boss. And things get especially bad when the mob boss loses his right hand man. But that still didn’t excuse the fact that he hadn’t been bothered to reach her when she’d been trying to reach him for four days. All his bodyguards ever said over the phone was: “Mr. Corinthos is not available right now.” After four days of the same response, she’d finally lost it and thrown her phone across the room. It still lay in a broken heap below the fireplace.

She entered the room and eyed her husband with a furious look in her eyes. He was dressed in one of his many dark suits, with a dark shirt and the same tie that he always wore. “Standard mob boss dress,” Carly figured. She knew better than to ask where he had been for the past few days. And wondering what he had been doing was definitely on the no-no list. It didn’t matter where he had been, but what mattered was that he had been ignoring them. She waited for him to speak first, just as he always did. She’d wait to blow her top until after he’d had his initial say.

“I know I’ve been gone for a few days and had no contact for that long-”

“-but you have to leave again,” she interrupted, unable to contain herself.

“Carly, you know things are tough right now in the business. I was extremely busy.”

“Too busy to see your son and your pregnant wife? Too busy to know that your sister and your best friend just suffered the most terrible loss of their lives? You haven’t even been there to say you’re sorry, Sonny.”

He gave her a confused look.

“You do remember the night that they came over for dinner, right?” she asked sarcastically, “Or is there too much junk about the business running through your mind that you don’t have room to remember family memories. Remember their big news? Or did you forget the moment they announced it?”

“Carly, what is this all about? Why are you getting so angry with me? It’s been like this before.”

“I’ve been trying to reach you for four days, Sonny. Four days. To tell you that your sister and your best friend lost their baby,” she blurted out.

Sonny was taken a back by this unexpected news. He struggled to find words to speak, but only a garbled mess came out. “Carly-I had no idea-If I had known-”

“Don’t give me that!” Carly hissed, keeping her voice down for Michael’s sake. “You would have known had you bothered to call back!” She could see that she was hurting him… and that the news of Courtney and Jason’s loss had been nearly as devastating for him as it had been for her.

Sonny knew he’d made a mistake. He’d left for South America five days ago… to go to a place where he’d have very little contact with anyone in Port Charles. The thought of calling to make sure that everything was okay hadn’t even crossed his mind. For once, Carly was right. He’d spent too much time worrying about the business and not enough time supporting the people that he loved. Losing two of his children had been the hardest thing he’d ever experienced… and certainly it was for Jason and Courtney too. “Are they okay?”

“No, Sonny, they’re not.” Carly replied coldly, though her tone began to soften. “When we lost our baby… we were hurt, so badly. You remember how that feels. You remember how sad we were and how confused and devastated our loss left us. Jason and Courtney need us right now.”

“I know,” he replied, his voice shaking a little.

Carly sighed and approached her husband slowly. She was still angry with him… but Carly could tell when she’d truly made her point come across. She reached her arms out and embraced Sonny. As tears slipped down her own cheeks, she hugged him tighter. A part of her knew that in some twisted way, Courtney’s miscarriage would bring them all closer together and that through their adversity, they’d eventually become a stronger family.
