Once Upon A December: Ch. 1

Courtney Matthews was sitting in a car beside the man she loved during a blizzard. It was snowing heavily; making the entire road and woods look like the North Pole. She shivered in the cold, even though the heat was on full blast.

Jason Morgan looked at her small frame shake from the freezing temperature.

"Are you cold?" he asked, already knowing the answer. She mock glared at him.

"Well it’s probably below zero if it’s snowing this hard," Courtney commented, looking out the car window. "How much farther to the cabin?"

"Still a ways," Jason said. She shivered again. He looked in the backseat and grabbed a blanket. The blonde smiled weakly and gratefully wrapped it around her shoulders.

"Any chance we could just skip telling Sonny and just - -"

"No, we owe it to Sonny to tell it to his face. Wait a minute; here’s the turn," he said, turning the steering wheel. Courtney scoffed.

"Turn? I don’t even see the road we’re on!" she said, wrapping the blanket tighter around her shaking body.

"Oh, come on. We’re safe remember?" Jason said, looking at her. Suddenly, the tires screeched and Courtney looked at him like he just told her the sky was purple.

After about twenty more minutes of driving, Courtney started getting worried.

"Okay - - no street lights, no cabin lights. It’s official; we’re lost," she said through her shivering. Jason laughed.

"No; it’s an adventure."

"Yeah, not even close. Adventures have guides and compasses and maps, even," she said, shaking again.

"Are sure you’re okay?" Jason asked seriously; seeing her continue to shiver from the cold. Courtney looked at him and nodded.

"Fine; just a little cold," she said, giving him a small smile. He didn’t believe her, but kept driving down the snow-covered road. They wouldn’t be all the way out in nowhere if they didn’t have to tell her brother that they had been seeing each other behind his back for two months. They would be lying on a beach in the Caymans with Courtney’s head lying on his bare chest as they looked out at the beautiful ocean that surrounded the islands.

‘Courtney in a bikini,’ Jason thought. Just the thought of that made his heart race. Every time he saw Courtney his heartbeat quickened. She was the only one that had the power to do that without even trying. He loved her so much, but Jason wasn’t sure if it was the right time to say so. It never seemed to be the right time.

‘Maybe when we get to the Caymans,’ he thought. Yes; then he would tell Courtney his real feelings for her. She could make him feel things that he thought had turned off for good a long time ago; after Robin betrayed him.

"It’s okay. We’re going to get to the cabin soon. There aren’t that many roads up here," Jason said, breaking his reverie he had been in. She scoffed again.

"This is a road?"

"Are you in a hurry?"

Courtney cocked her head and smiled at him.

"No, not at all. Just watch the road - - no, I’m just fine here with you in our own little snowglobe," she joked. Jason laughed. She could make him laugh almost as if it was as easy as walking.

Courtney looked back at the road and gasped.

"Jason! Watch out!" she screamed. Jason’s eyes snapped back to the road as he tried to swerve, but the ice on the road prevented him from doing so. Before he could register what was happening, the car came in contact with something with a loud crash and everything went dark.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 2

Jason’s eyes groggily opened. Where was he?

Slowly, he sat up and remembered what had happened. Panicked, he looked over at Courtney. Her head was against the dashboard, blood all over her blonde hair. Even though he was in a lot of pain, he cautiously lifted her head up. Her forehead was bleeding what seemed like buckets of blood. He gulped and grabbed his cell phone.

"Come on, come on!" Jason ordered; frustrated to the phone. But there was no use. The blizzard was cutting off all signals. They were stuck.

He gently pushed Courtney limp body upright and grabbed two clean blankets from the backseat. One he wrapped around her head; just enough so it wasn’t too tight but it helped to stop the blood. The other blanket he wrapped around her freezing body. Jason then pulled her onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her; trying to keep her warm. He checked her pulse. It was weak, but there was a faint beating.

"Come on, baby. Please wake up. I love you too much to lose you," he pleaded; tears running down his cheeks. He suddenly felt very alone and very tired.

*~*

Courtney opened her eyes. Where was she? Standing up, she looked around. It was like she was on a huge cloud.

"Hello? Is anyone here?" she called out. No one answered. The blonde walked around. She noticed what looked like a TV screen in a cloud-like wall. Confused, Courtney walked up to it. Suddenly, it flickered on. She looked closer and noticed it was Jason in the wrecked car. And he was holding her blanket wrapped body and talking to her.

‘What’s he saying?’ she thought. Almost as if whoever was in charge of this had physic powers, the sound turned on and she heard Jason talking to her.

"Courtney please wake up. Please baby, I love you way too much to lose you. Hang on, baby," he said to her. Courtney gasped. He loved her? Jason Morgan, the love of her life, love her? She bit her lip. Then she noticed her head was also wrapped in a blanket. A blood soaked blanket.

Courtney screamed and jumped back. She had just now noticed that there was blood all over her clothes and in her hair. She reached up and felt her face. It was covered in dried blood. Her breathing quickly sped up. She looked back at the TV screen. It was fading. Now all of the sudden all of her memories flashed on and off on the screen. It was like her entire life if someone hit the fast forward button. It went all the way up until the accident. Then for some reason, it went back in time.

The blonde moved closer to the screen and realized what memory it was. She remembered every single detail about that night. Even the date. December 6, 2002.

As she watched the memory on the screen, tears filled her eyes slowly as she remembered everything that happened that night.

‘More than Jason knew,’ Courtney thought, placing her hand on her stomach. As the replay of the night she and Jason made love for the first time, she felt like all the other memories were slowly leaving her mind. The only one that mattered was this one. When it ended, the screen went black and she felt like her head was spinning in circle. She dropped onto the cloudy floor. Her eyes felt so heavy; so very heavy.

"Jason," she whispered, before her eyes shut and her soul disappeared.

Jason continued rubbing Courtney’s shoulders; trying to keep her body heat up.

"Come on, baby. Please wake up. Please," he pleaded. Suddenly, there was a flashlight shining through the windshield. "We’re in here! She needs to get to a hospital!" he yelled. "It’s going to be okay, Courtney," he said, rubbing her cheek. She didn’t move.

Sonny and Carly rushed into the emergency room. Bobbie was waiting for them; tears running down her cheeks.

"Where’s Courtney?!" Sonny asked frantically.

"She’s in surgery. They don’t know if they-they’re going to make it," Bobbie managed to say.

"Jason’s in surgery too?" Carly asked. Bobbie shook her head.

"No; he’s b-being examined right now. Courtney-Courtney is in surgery. They are trying to save her and the b-baby."

Sonny’s eyes widened. Carly was also very shocked.

"Baby? Courtney’s pregnant?" Sonny said, not believing his baby sister was pregnant. Bobbie nodded before needing to leave to help someone. He turned to his wife.

"Did you know about this?"

"No, I swear to God, Sonny I didn’t. I don’t even think Jason knows," Carly said, then immediately regretting it.

"Jason? Why would she tell him before - -" he started, but then he got it. Jason was the father. "Did you know that they were seeing each other?"

Carly sighed and nodded. Sonny’s eyes reflected anger and betrayal.

"Sonny before you get all upset, concentrate on the health of your sister and niece or nephew that are fighting for their lives!" the dark blonde said. He looked at her and nodded. He had to think about Courtney right now.

Jason was admitted for observation, but he needed to see if Courtney was okay. His head hurt and he was in pain, but he could barely feel it. He knew the accident was his fault. He should have kept a better eye on the road. If Courtney died, heaven forbid, it would be his fault.

‘She can’t die,’ he tired to convince himself. ‘I love her so much. I never got to tell her.’

There was a knock at the door.

"Come in."

A red-eyed Carly poked her head in the door. It was obvious she had been crying.

"Are y-you up for visitors?" she asked, trying to smile. He nodded.

"How’s Courtney?"

"S-She’s in surgery. T-The doctors don’t know if they’ll make it or not," Carly said, sitting on the bed.

"They? What are you talking about?" Jason asked, confused. She sighed. He didn’t know.

"Jase, um, I don’t know if I’m the right one to tell you this, but.....Courtney’s pregnant," the dark blonde said, waiting for Jason’s reaction. He stared at her like she had grown two heads.

"Preg-pregnant? Courtney’s pregnant?" he stammered, trying to get hold on those words. Carly sadly nodded. "Oh my God."

"Sonny....Sonny knows. About the baby and....that you two were seeing each other," she explained softly, looking at her hands. Jason rubbed his sore forehead.

"No...this can’t be happening. I love her! If the baby dies it’s going to be my fault!"

*~*

"Sonny?"

Sonny looked up at Monica. He stood up quickly.

"How’s Courtney?" he asked frantically. Monica sighed.

"She.....She’s lost a major amount of blood in a short amount of time. The baby is fine, but she still runs the risk of a miscarriage. Courtney’s in the recovery room right now. I don’t know when she’ll wake up.....or even if she will," Monica said, tears filling her eyes. Sonny nodded and walked into the recovery room.

Courtney was lying on a hospital bed; her entire head wrapped in bandages. A oxygen mask covered her nose and mouth and at least a dozen machines beeped around her. Her face had a few cuts on it. Sonny hated to see his sister like this. He sat down on the chair next to her and held her ice-cold hand.

"Hey sis. I don’t know if you can hear me or not, but you have to wake up, okay? The baby, Jason, Carly, Michael, and I love you so much. I know we never got to spend much time together, but I want to. I want to get to know my baby sister. I love you so much," Sonny said, tears filling his brown eyes.

After a few hours, Sonny was still sitting beside Courtney. Monica sighed when she came in.

"Sonny," she said softly. He turned around.

"I’m going to have to ask you to leave. We have to get Courtney up to her room," Monica said. He nodded and stood up. Courtney stirred.

"Wait - - I think she’s waking up," Sonny said, looking at her, hoping she was. Her blue eyes slowly blinked open.

"Jason - -," she whispered. Her eyes shut for a second then opened again. She blinked and looked at Sonny. He grinned.

"Courtney, you’re awake! I knew you were too strong to give up," he said triumphantly. Courtney looked at him with a confused _expression on her face.

"Who are you?" she asked.

Once Upon A December: Ch. 3

Sonny froze. She didn’t remember him. He heard Monica gasp behind him. Courtney just stared. Who was he? And the woman behind him? Where was she?

"Courtney.....do you know where you are?" Monica asked cautiously, now standing beside Sonny.

"Am I Courtney?"

Monica nodded.

"I....don’t know....where I am...." she said, looking around. Monica bit her lip. Sonny was still looking at her without moving.

"Sonny....maybe you should go tell Jason what’s happened," she suggested. He sighed and nodded and walked out of the recovery room. Monica sat down in the chair Sonny had occupied.

"Your name is Courtney Matthews. You’re in a hospital. You were in a car accident and you lost a lot of blood when you hit your head. That’s....that’s probably why you have lost your memory," she tried to explain slowly. Courtney looked out the window. She lost her memory? She felt like she didn’t even have a memory to begin with.

"Do you remember anything at all?"

She closed her eyes and thought for a second.

"No," she said, her voice dry. Monica sighed.

"That’s okay....we should get you moved up to your room," she said, standing up.

"Uh.....who...who was the man who was in here before?" Courtney asked, her voice dripping with fatigue.

"That was your brother, Sonny," Monica replied.

*~*

Sonny opened the door to Jason’s room to find him and Carly deep in conversation. They abruptly stopped when he came in.

"H-How is she?" Carly asked frantically. Sonny sighed. He sat down beside Carly.

"I know.....I know this might sound crazy....even....impossible to understand....but I saw it with my own eyes...," Sonny started, not even sure if he could finish. "Courtney’s-Courtney doesn’t....she...she lost her memory. She doesn’t remember anything..."

Jason gasped. No, this couldn’t be happening. He loved Courtney so much and he almost lost her. And now he had. He had lost the Courtney he knew and loved so much.

"No....she...she couldn’t of lost her memory! She couldn’t have!" Jason said, standing up. Carly started crying. A tear slipped from Sonny’s eye as he remembered that Courtney couldn’t remember him. "I never....I never got to tell her that I loved her...."

"You fell in love with my sister?"

"Yes....we....we were on our way to the cabin....to tell you face to face, Sonny, that we had been seeing each other without....without you knowing about us," Jason replied. Sonny sighed. He felt angry, but yet, he thought that he couldn’t do anything to make Jason stop loving her. But Courtney couldn’t remember anything. How can you love someone you don’t remember?

*~*

The next day, Jason was released from the hospital, but he didn’t leave it. He went straight to see Courtney and he found her in there talking with Monica. When he came in, Courtney looked up at him and her eyes met the most beautiful, deep, blue eyes she had seen in the last twelve hours. She looked so much different. Not really on the outside, but her eyes seemed to have lost their luster and happiness.

"Jason! I’m glad to see that you are feeling better. Uh, why don’t you stay here with Courtney while I go check on something," Monica said, standing up. He nodded.

"Thanks," he whispered when she walked by. She smiled.

"No problem." She then left. Jason sighed and sat down beside her. She gave him a small smile.

"I’m sorry....I don’t remember you," she said quietly.

"It’s okay. My name’s Jason, by the way," he said. She smiled.

"I’m sorry I don’t remember.....anything really. I know my name and that I have a brother but that’s about it," Courtney whispered, looking out the window.

"Yeah, Sonny does that too."

"What?"

"He looks out the window whenever he’s stressed out or nervous."

"Does he get stressed out a lot?"

"Yeah....I guess you could say that," Jason said. Courtney nodded.

"So how do I know you?" she asked. He sighed.

"I work for Sonny."

She nodded. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to tell her that they were in love quite yet. Hell, he wasn’t even sure that she knew she was pregnant yet.

"So we were friends?"

Jason laughed to himself.

"Yeah you could say that."

Courtney nodded.

"So.....how well did you know me?"

He probably knew her better than anyone else.

"Pretty well. I mean, you weren’t afraid to come to me with your problems or anything," Jason replied. She nodded again.

"I’m sorry that I don’t remember you. I want to, I really do. But...."

He reached up and put his hand over hers.

"Hey - - it’s not your fault. You can’t control what you remember....but Sonny and Carly and I want to help you remember," Jason said. Courtney sat there for a moment. When he touched her hand, it was like a spark of electricity shot up her arm. But....it felt somewhat familiar.

"Who’s Carly?"

"Sonny’s wife. Well, actually, his second wife," Jason said. "He was married before Carly but....she and their unborn child died in a bomb."

"I’m sorry."

"Yeah, I don’t really think Sonny fully got over it. But now he and Carly are married and they have a son, Michael. Sonny adopted Michael so he’s like a father to him. Carly and Sonny had a baby once, but....Carly fell down a flight of stairs and had a miscarriage," he explained. He hated to think that Courtney almost had one herself.

"Wow. That’s a lot for my brother to go through," Courtney said.

"Yeah, but he’s strong. He’s got Michael and Carly......and you worth fighting for," he said softly, looking up at her. She smiled.
