Chapter 16

Courtney walked him to the elevator, holding his hand with her face pressed against his shoulder. They had only reunited weeks ago and she didn't want to say goodbye. She didn't want him to leave, especially since there was a chance he would never come back.

As they reached the door to the penthouse he turned towards her. "I love you," he whispered.

"I love you, too."

He looked at her carefully as if he were memorizing the lines of her face, and then brought their intertwined fingers to his lips so that he could kiss them. Then he opened the door and walked out of the penthouse with Courtney behind him. He pressed the button on the elevator and as they waited he turned to Courtney and leaned down to kiss her softly on the lips.

She pulled away. "Jason I'm scared for you. "I'm afraid to lose you and the baby will never know his father."

"Don't think that way, Courtney," Jason said with a soothing tone. "I'm going to bring your brother home, then I'll be back. There's nothing that can keep me away from you and our baby."

"Don't say that! It's not true."

"I'll be back, I promise you. Even if I shouldn't. Even if I can't guarantee it. I'll say it. I'll be back."

"You promised..."

Jason was about to lean in for another kiss when the elevator doors opened. He quickly pressed his lips against her then stepped into the elevator. "I love you," he told her before the doors slid closed.

"Just be safe!" Courtney yelled as she saw the man that she loved disappear.

With tears in her eyes, Courtney turned around and returned to the penthouse.

Jason sat silently as he watched Ric navigate the small aircraft. After taking a jet to Miami, the two had chartered a smaller plane that would be more capable of landing on a beach, since it was very unlikely that the island Ric believed Sonny was on would have a runway.

Most of the trip was done in distrustful silence. Jason only really spoke to Max or asked Ric about arrival and departure information. They both avoided the subject of their purpose in going to the island. But now that they were getting close it was time to set his plan in motion.

Jason watched as the tiny island came into view. It slowly became larger until it filled the entire field of view. It looked deserted, uninhabited, it didn't seem as if anyone had ever been there, so he couldn't imagine Sonny being there now.

Ric managed to land the plane easily, and soon it was turned around and parked on the end of the strip of beach so that it would make it easy for them to take off quickly if they needed to.

"So, Ric, against my better judgment I trusted you to bring me here and take me to Sonny. Don't make me regret trusting you," Jason warned as Ric cut the engine off.

"Don't make you regret?" Ric asked. "What would you do if I did betray you? You'd be trapped on this island with no escape."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that."

"Well, you have nothing to worry about. I haven't betrayed you--"

"Yet."

"Believe what you want to believe, Morgan, but I'm here to find Sonny and this is as far as his clues go. If we want to find Sonny we'll have to get out and search." With that said, Ric undid the straps from his seat and got up to exit the plane. Jason followed suit.

On the sandy beach Ric spoke. "It would be best if we split up and each four of us go our separate ways. We'd cover more ground that way."

"I agree," Jason told him, while taking his gun out from behind his back. He pointed out different parts of the island. "You go that way and then we meet up here in half an hour."

"Fine." The four of them split up in different directions. As soon as Ric was out of sight and out of hearing range, Jason doubled back and returned to the beach. A couple of minutes later Max showed up.

"Follow the other guy. I'm going after Ric and I know he'll lead me straight to Sonny, or at least to whatever he's trying to hide."

Max nodded then took off in the direction of Ric's companion. Jason didn't have any trouble picking up Ric's trail. Ric left an obvious path of trampled leaves and disturbed wildlife. And just like he believed, the trail led straight to the only sign of civilization.

There was a small hut with a single flap for a door. Brandishing his gun and preparing for the worst, Jason charged into the hut and was unprepared for the sight in front of him.

Jason had already been gone a day and Courtney feared the worst. Every time she thought about him--and that was constantly when she wasn't worrying about her baby--she would get this terrible feeling. She hoped it was only because of his hasty departure and her mistrust of Ric, who had already proven that he was a liar. Could he be lying about the clue my brother left? Courtney wondered. Please don't let that be true! Courtney didn't think she could take any more wondering about Sonny. She thought she had come to the point where she could even accept his death if it meant that she and Jason would no longer have to worry.

She decided to go downstairs and try to make herself some tea to try to calm herself down. She had just made it to the top step when she felt her stomach cramp. It felt as if someone had grabbed her uterus and was squeezing it...hard. She had to grab the wall for support. It eased up a little and she took the opportunity to sit down so that she didn't fall down the stairs. Sitting didn't help and she felt her stomach tighten again. They couldn't be contractions could they? God, I hope not! It would be way too soon! Courtney began to panic.

"Help!" she called out. "Jason!" But she knew it was futile to call for him.

Suddenly Johnny burst through the penthouse door. "Courtney? What's wrong?" He ran up the stairs when he saw her sitting there with her eyes squeezed shut with pain.

"Oh, Johnny! Thank, God, you're here!" She had tears in her eyes. "I don't know, but something is wrong with the baby." She hissed in pain when she felt another squeeze.

"Do you think you can walk?" Johnny asked.

"I don't know."

"Let's try." Johnny took her hands in his and helped her stand up. Then he slowly helped her down the stairs. It wasn't until they made it to the bottom that Courtney felt another squeeze. "Ooh!" She let out in pain.

"That's it," Johnny said, as he swooped her up. Then he carried her out the penthouse. Paulie was standing guard at the elevator. "Call the limo!" Johnny barked. "I'm taking Courtney to the hospital."
