Chapter 1:

Courtney lay in her bed, staring up at the white ceiling. Her life had changed so much in the past months; it was unbelievable. And yet, time seemed to move so slowly. Was it only two weeks earlier that she had chosen to leave Port Charles and come to California for college? Had she really let her love for Jason go?

“Hey Court, you okay?” Courtney’s roommate Gabriella asked, interrupting Courtney’s thoughts. “You’ve been working too hard! Just like back in High School.”

Courtney smiled, remembering the day she’d seen Gabby for the first time in California.

***Flashback***

She was still nervous about her new life and getting adjusted to the changes that she’d had to make. She was constantly greeted with unfamiliar faces, none of whom seemed to offer any comfort. She’d only moved a week earlier, barely enough time to learn the basic city layout. But there she was, standing outside the tall building, awaiting her first job interview. “I owe Sonny one,” she thought, “as much as I wish that I didn’t.” As she waited outside the small office, she studied the faces of the people who could become her co-workers. She wondered what their stories were. Had any of them ever been forced to give up their heart? As Courtney pondered this question, she spotted a familiar figure.

Courtney was shocked to think that one of her very best friends from Atlantic City was in California, let alone in the same building where she was hoping to get a job! “It can’t be her,” she thought. “That’s impossible.”

“Miss,” the receptionist said, catching Courtney’s attention, “Mr. Abrams is ready to see you.”

An hour later, Courtney left the office-with a job, but that wasn’t what was on her mind. She grabbed her small black bag and hurried out, hoping to find out if it had really been Gabriella that she’d seen earlier. She remembered seeing the tall brunette walk toward the right office wing, but Courtney decided to check at the desk first.

“Um, yea, I-uh,” Courtney asked the lady at the desk, “need a favor. Is there a Gabriella Potter that works here?”

“Hmm… lemme check. Ah yes, do you need an office number?”

Courtney tried to hide her surprise from the receptionist, hoping not to attract too much attention to her request. It had been Gabby that she’d seen before the interview! “Oh, could you get the number? Thank you so much.”

Courtney walked down the hall, searching for room 112. She was unsure of what she was going to say when she located her old friend, but she didn’t have much time to think about it because Gabby, who was unaware that she was about to find a long lost friend, was walking directly towards her.

“Gabby!” Courtney cried, hoping to catch her attention. Gabby turned around, unsure of whether she had her name being called or not. She gasped, unable to believe whom she was seeing.

“Courtney?” she managed to choke out, “I don’t understand! What are you doing here?”

***End Flashback***

“I was just remembering that day we met at the office. Gosh, I would have been so miserable without you Gabby,” Courtney told the girl sitting on the bed across from hers. “We still have so much catching up to do. I’m really glad we found this apartment.”

“Yea, me too,” Gabby replied. “Hey listen, so I met this guy, Kaleb. He seems really cool, and he’s got this very attractive friend Ja-“

“Gabby,” Courtney interrupted, “you know I’m not interested. Not right now.”

“Come on Court! Have a little fun. You haven’t been out with anyone since you got here. I don’t understand why you’re not into dating. You certainly were back in Atlantic City! There are tons of great guys around here.”

Courtney’s blue eyes filled with tears as she thought of Jason and how wonderful they had been together. “I could never replace him,” she thought. She turned away from Gabby’s inquiring face, hoping that her eyes wouldn’t reveal too much. She wasn’t eager to explain. Before thinking, she answered softly, but not softly enough, “I left my heart in Port Charles.”

The attractive young man stood outside the door across the hall from his own. He lifted his hand to knock, but his hand faltered, unsure if knocking was the right thing to do. He had never had to before. His choice was made for him, however, for at that moment, Carly opened the door. Her eyes opened wide in surprise. She wasn’t expecting to see Jason standing there.

“Hey. What are you doing? You know you don’t have to knock.”

“Yea, it’s nothing. No big deal,” he replied, his eyes holding the seemingly blank stare that Carly knew how to read so well.

“Come on Jason. I know you better than that,” the skinny blonde answered, scanning his unkempt manner, “you look like you haven’t slept in days.”

“I’ve been busy with work for Sonny.”

Carly sighed, knowing that wasn’t all that was bothering Jason, but she had finally learned to not press him, at least not now, especially when it had to do with Courtney. “Do you want to come in? Michael will be happy to see you.” She paused, choosing her words carefully. “You know, you haven’t been around much since…”

“I know, Carly,” Jason answered as he turned to go inside of his own penthouse.

“I can see it in your eyes,” Carly told him. She reached out to touch his arm, to offer some form of comfort to her best friend who she knew was hurting so much. Instead, he turned away from her, eager to get away. “Letting her go was the hardest thing you’ve ever done.”

Jason stared at Carly, his eyes filled with the pain of the last two weeks. “I’ll be over later,” he said simply.

“Ok. Jason, you know I’m always going to be here for you. You’re my best friend, and I know how hard this is for you.”

“Just let it be, Carly. It’s my life.”

Gabby turned to look at Courtney, whose eyes were filled with tears. “Hey sweetie, are you ok?”

Courtney wiped her eyes, trying to hide her emotions from Gabby. “I’ll be fine,” she said as she forced a small smile. “I made my choice to come here, but I’m glad for what I had.”

“Well, I have a little proposal to make,” Gabby started, eager to change the subject to something happier, “how about spending sometime with me in Barcelona?”

“Oh Gabby! That would be so wonderful. I’ve always wanted to go to Spain!” Courtney exclaimed with a real smile, “I think you’re right. A vacation is something I need. Being on my own has been so stressful.” She jumped off the bed to give Gabby a hug, glad that she had a friend who understood her. For a moment, her mind wandered to the last time she had hoped to go to Barcelona.

***Flashback***

Courtney was frightened by the thought that Jason had been coughing up blood all night. Why hadn’t he told her how bad it was?

“This isn’t supposed to be happening,” she thought, “it was just a car ride. A car-ride to the cabin to tell Sonny about us.” Her thoughts turned to Jason, would he live through the night?

“Ok, stay with me. Come on,” she pleaded. She continued talking, telling Jason what they would do once they got out of the car safely. “How are you doing, ok?”

“Yea, I’m - I’m ok,” he answered, coughing as he said it, “Where would we go next?”

“Oh, I don't know. I'm -- the only places I've ever been besides Port Charles are Reno and Atlantic City,” she replied, trying not to show her fear.

“Spain.”

“Ok. We’ll go to Spain. What's the name of that -- that city where that artist did all those wonderful buildings?”

“Barcelona,” he managed to say.

Courtney talked more of what they would do in Spain, but her mind was only focused on Jason and getting him out of the car safely. “Why did the accident have to happen?” she thought.

“Oh, Jason, but you have to hang on. You have to hang on, ok?” she spoke out loud, “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” he whispered before passing out.

***End Flashback***

“Why am I thinking about when were in the car accident and I first told her I loved her?” Jason thought to himself as he entered his penthouse after the conversation he’d had with Carly. “Carly’s right about one thing, I have been ignoring her and Michael since Courtney left Port Charles.” Why couldn’t he move on and be happy that Courtney was safe in California? He knew it was the right thing for them to stay apart, besides, Sonny had forbidden it.

The brown-haired man shook his head. The house was so quiet, but he liked it that way. After all, he was a man of few words himself. What he needed was a break from Port Charles and Sonny. He reflected on the memory that had come to him earlier. That was it, he’d go to Barcelona.
