Summary: Jason takes Courtney on her dream vacation which turns into a nightmare.

Author’s Note: This is the first time I have ever posted any fanfiction. Feedback would be wonderful - just make sure it’s honest…even brutally honest, if necessary. The story is relayed, in parts, as a series of flashbacks; I hope that it isn’t too confusing.

PART ONE

The water poured from the sky as it had done for days. It seemed like days; she wasn’t quite sure how many. It pounded the foliage around her so hard that it seemed to be raining up from the wet earth as well as down from the treetops above. She wrapped her fingers around one of the bars of the cage and watched water trace it’s path down her wrinkled fingers and leap off the end of her thumb as though it were committing suicide.

This was not a good vacation.

Why had she picked New Zealand? Why not Mexico or Hawaii or Paris like a normal person? When Jason had asked where she wanted to go, why did she say, “New Zealand”?

His eyes were glowing with excitement when he had found her on the docks that day.

“Where do you want to go, Courtney?” he had said as he grabbed her elbows and pulled her to him.

“What? For dinner?” she smiled, happy that he wasn’t late.

“No. Where have you always wanted to go? What is your dream vacation?” he said, with pride.

“What?”

“Come on. I’m taking you away, and I want to know where we are going.”

“Taking me away? On vacation? Jason, we can’t. How could we?”

Jason continued smirking at her, teasing her with his reticence.

“Jason. I have to work. You have to pretend you’re married to Brenda, remember? Hello? Does the name Alcazar ring any bells for you?” she said, jabbing at his stomach playfully.

Jason let go of Courtney’s elbows and reached to the inside pocket of his black leather jacket. He raised his eyebrows for emphasis, pulled out a folded stack of papers and held them out to her.

“What are those?” Courtney asked, skeptically.

“Read them.”

“Being mysterious, it’s really your thing, isn’t it?” she said and grasped the papers out of Jason’s gloved hand.

She scanned the papers for key words and found them quickly, “Brenda” “Morgan” “Annulment” - that was all she needed to throw her arms around Jason’s neck.

He hugged her tightly and whispered, “it’s over.”

She pulled away and met his eyes with hers, “this is so great! But I mean, is everything okay, I mean, how can you do this? Won’t this implicate you in…”

“No. It’s over. Sonny, Brenda and I are all in the clear.”

“Oh Jason!”

“Pretty great, right?”

“That’s an understatement.”

She gazed at the papers again, running her eyes over the typed words.

“So,” Jason gained her attention again, “we’re going on vacation. We’re getting out of Port Charles for awhile. We both need it.”

“But…”

“I just told Sonny that I needed to get the hell out of here, that I needed a break, and that I was taking you with me,” he interrupted.

“He must have loved that,” she laughed and tucked her hair behind her ears.

“Actually, it went pretty well.”

“Jason, I just can’t up and leave my job. That would really put Bobbie…”

“Bobbie okay’d it.”

“You…”

“Yes.”

“But Jason, I can’t afford to just…”

“My treat.”

“I can’t just…”

“Yes you can,” Jason said stiffly. “You deserve this, Courtney. I deserve this.”

Courtney smiled, pleased with Jason’s success at shooting down all of her objections. He kept her gaze and patiently waited for her response.

She placed her hand on his chest and said lowly, “New Zealand. I’ve always wanted to go there.”

Her eyes were sore and ached with a steady burning. She used to like rain. The way the clouds would begin joining forces until the sky was a gray quilt. She loved the way the smell crept into buildings, alerting its intensions. She loved the way the first few drops would fall, and she would wonder if she imagined it, until the few drops were joined by a few more and would become a parade of water. She loved the romance of rain. She loved their first kiss in the rain. Could any other weather have been appropriate?

Courtney wondered if she would ever feel his lips take her own again. She squinted her eyes and shook the thought from her head. That kind of thinking wouldn’t be useful right now. Just because it looked like his hand, didn’t mean that it was his hand. That bastard Marcillio would have cut off his own father’s hand just to freak her out.

Courtney shook her head again, “No. No. No.”

She laughed at herself.

“I’m talking to myself out loud again.”

Why had she insisted on being spontaneous? When Jason had started verbalizing plans while they were on the plane, why did she say,

********

“Oh Jason, let’s just get there and wing it!”

He smiled warmly, took her hand in his and conceded, “okay.” He kissed her gently and she remembered, at that moment, never being happier in her entire life. It’s amazing how quickly a moment like that can pass and be taken for granted.

The hotel room in Christchurch was far more extravagant than either of them could have imagined. Their feet sank into the plush sage green carpet as they walked into the room. A concierge flipped patina light switches, explained air conditioning, the massaging benefits of the hot tub, and various superfluous amenities offered by the hotel.

Jason interrupted the man as he explained turn down service by placing a one hundred dollar bill in the man’s hand and said politely, “thank you.”

The concierge nodded his head without looking at the generous tip in his hand and finished with, “I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here in our country.” He turned on his heel and exited the room.

“Jason!”

“I know,” he sighed.

“It’s so…”

“Pretentious?”

“I was going to say, ‘beautiful’,” she smiled as she leaned back on the largest bed she had ever seen. The headboard was a dark rich wood with intricate fairies and demons carved into every visible portion. A large gauzy canopy was draped over the top of the erect bedposts, and fine burgundy and gold silk bedding adorned the mattress and pillows. “You picked this place out?”

“Uh, no,” he said walking about the room, opening drawers and closets and medicine cabinets. “Carly did.”

“It shows,” she laughed. “It’s lovely Jason. Really. It’s perfect.”

“I’m glad you think so,” he said, while he opened and closed windows and dividing doors.

Jason pulled the window lock to the side and opened the window nearest to the bed.

“Jason?” Courtney said, sitting up on the edge of the bed, “what are you doing?”

“Hmm?” he turned from the window to face her.

“Why are you investigating our room? Looking in every drawer, opening and closing windows? What are you doing?”

“I…I don’t know. I guess just checking out our surroundings. Being safe.”

“Have you ever taken a vacation before? You’re supposed to be enjoying yourself,” Courtney said while standing up and walking over to Jason by the window. She placed her hand on his cheek and ran her thumb over his right cheekbone. He closed his eyes briefly and leaned his face into her hand. “You don’t need to worry about our safety here,” she continued. “You don’t need to be so guarded and observant, okay? Vacation, Jason. We’re on vacation. Relax.”

Jason responded by cupping the back of Courtney’s neck with his hand and pulling her into a passionate kiss.

********

She remembered how that kiss tasted of coffee and chocolate, from their red-eye breakfast. She wanted to taste him on her mouth right now. She tipped her head back and let the rain collect in the back of her throat and then swallowed it. He could be hurt. He could be dead.

“I’ve got to get out of here,” Courtney whispered.
