Chapter 3

Considering the fact that Marco knew and didn’t totally disapprove, Violet and Joe went public with their relationship. Weeks turned into months and soon, Catherine’s speak-easy would be opening. Joe kept his promise about Murphy. He didn’t ever speak or hurt Violet.

Joe picked Violet up on Christmas Eve. The town was glittered with freshly fallen snow. Violet wore a crimson dress to match the holiday season. She looked wonderful. Joe got nervous just thinking about what he had planned.

They arrived at Catherine’s speak-easy and walked in.

“What are we doing here Joe? It’s not even open for business yet.” Violet said smiling.

“Well it’s open for us.” Joe took Violet’s hand and led her in. The place was candle lit with one table set for two.

“Oh My Gosh Joe! Did you do this by yourself? It’s beautiful.” Violet asked, her dark blue eyes sparkling.

“I had some help from Catherine.” Joe replied with a smile. Joe held out his hand for Violet to take.

“Can I have this dance?” Joe asked.

“There’s no music.”

“We’ll make our own.” Joe and Violet danced for a while, just loving the way that they felt with each other. After they were done dancing, they sat at the table. When Joe lifted up the silver dome that was covering Violet’s plate, she saw a little black box instead of her dinner. Joe took the box and got on one knee. He opened the box to reveal a beautiful pear shaped diamond ring. Violet was in a state of shock. Joe took a breath.

“I met you and my life changed. I’ve never known anyone like you Violet. I love how we can just be in each other’s presence and that’s enough for us. I love how your smile is the thing that I look forward to everyday that I wake up. I love how you make me want to live. I love you, Violet. And I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you-Will you be my wife?” Violet had tears in her eyes. Her whole entire being had fallen in love with this man who wanted her. With tears in her eyes and the biggest smile she had, she said “Yes!”

With Marco on their minds, Joe and Violet decided that they would marry secretly in Niagara Falls. They just weren’t sure of a day yet. They were thinking of New Year’s Day, after Catherine’s speak-easy opened. Violet wished she could tell the world that she was going to marry the man that was destined to be with her, but she knew it would be better to tell them that she had already married Joe. “Then no one can tell us no.” Violet thought to herself. She couldn’t even wear her engagement ring when Marco was around, but when Violet and Joe were alone together, she slipped on her ring.
