Chapter 1
Joe met Violet on a warm late-summer day in 1926 when his boss and best friend, Marco had invited him to dinner one night and introduced her to him. Joe didn’t even know Marco had a sister, so when a beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed angel come down the stairs, he was completely shocked.
“Joe, this is Violet, my baby sister, Violet, this is Joe, my best friend and partner.” Marco introduced the two. They exchanged hellos.
“Marco never told me he had a sister.” Joe told Violet as he glared at Marco for keeping such a beautiful person a secret.
“Well that’s funny, because Marco talks about you all the time.” Violet was shocked at how handsome Joe was. She never imagined him looking that way, he had short, light brown hair and the most beautiful blue eyes she had ever seen.
“So as soon as Catherine is ready and Eva comes, we can go to dinner.” Marco said, bringing both Joe and Violet out of their thoughts of each other.
By the time Catherine was down stairs, Eva was at the apartment and Michael, Marco and Catherine’s son, was asleep.
“Are we already now?” Marco asked everyone, but mainly to his wife who had taken forever to get ready. Everyone nodded. Catherine looped her arm in Marco’s and Joe offered Violet his. She happily accepted it, and they were on their way.
After they were done eating, Catherine and Marco went to the back of the restaurant to talk to Paul, Marco’s some-what employee, and Catherine’s business partner for the speak-easy she was opening. Violet and Joe were left alone to talk to each other.
“So why did you leave warm, sunny California for Port Charles, New York. Not that I’m complaining.” Joe asked Violet with a sly smile.
“Ah, it’s a long story. I’m sure you don’t care all that much to listen.” Violet looked down sadly. Joe took her hand in his.
“I do want to know, tell me.”
“Well, I left California because of my ex-boyfriend, Murphy.” She paused. “H-he was nice to me in the beginning. I thought I was in love. We were even engaged. But than he just turned into a monster! He treated me like I was his property. He even started to beat me.” She had tears in her eyes now. “I had to get away, so I called Marco and he told me I could stay here as long as I wanted to. I’ve been here for a little over a week now.”
“Does Murphy know you’re here in Port Charles?” Joe asked with concern.
“I’m sure he knows that I’m somewhere in New York because I told him Marco lived in here, but I never told him which city…it’s only a matter of time before he finds me.” A tear fell on her cheek and Joe wiped it away.
“Don’t worry. Your safe here with Marco, Catherine,…and me.” Violet looked up at Joe gratefully and smiled.
“Thank you.”
“Say, why don’t I show you some of what this town has to offer, huh?” Joe asked.
“Sure, sounds like fun.” Violet replied, happy to get Murphy off of her mind.
That night, Joe showed Violet all he thought she would like-the park, the huge fountain, the shops and finally the docks with the beautiful view of the river and the night sky with stars and the moon that provided the only light. When he was finally home, all he could think about was Violet. He thought about how easy it was to talk to her. He was never that open with people he first met, but he found himself talking up a storm with her.
“She definitely made an impression on me.” He thought as he went to bed. He hoped that he would dream of her.
Chapter 2
A few days later…
Violet was still giddy from her night on the town with Joe. She was sitting at the table helping Catherine pick out decorations for her speak-easy when Catherine brought her out of her thoughts.
“So, I was thinking of opening the speak-easy on New Year’s Eve!”
“Mm-hmm, that’s nice.” Violet replied, totally oblivious.
“Alright, who is it?” Catherine asked, smiling.
“What? How do you know it’s a who?”
“Because you just told me. Let me guess…it’s Joe, right?”
“I’m not telling!” Violet knew she was caught.
“Oh My Gosh it is! I knew sparks were flying the other night! I could see them in both pairs of your blue eyes! So tell me, did he kiss you when you went off to “see the town”?”
“No, he was a perfect gentleman! Besides, he probably doesn’t like me like that.” Violet said, looking sad.
“Oh honey yes he does! Joe is my best friend, which means I know him better than anyone. And believe me, he’s completely love struck. I’ve seen the way he looks at you when he comes over to talk business with Marco. He turns all red in the face and just gazes longingly for you!” Catherine said matter-of-factly.
“Oh please!...but let’s say he does like me…what about Marco? I don’t think he would approve.” Violet said regretfully.
“Well, he might not like it in the beginning, but Marco never gets in the way of true love. He knows when to step aside and let love be love.”
“Okay, we’re not talking about this anymore. I’m going downstairs to see what the men are up to.” Catherine laughed and watched Violet go.
Marco had gone in the other room when he and Joe had finished talking business. When Violet came down the stairs, Joe’s heart melted, just like it did every time he saw her.
“Hi Joe, how are you?” Violet asked, a little nervous.
“I’m good now that I’ve seen you today. I was wondering something…would you want to go out with me tonight? I could take you to dinner than we could walk around for a bit. The nights are going to be getting cooler soon. We should enjoy them while we can.” Joe was so nervous about asking her out. His stomach was doing flip-flops.
“I would love to.” Violet told Joe, smiling brightly. Joe loved the way her eyes sparkled when she was happy and smiling.
“Great, than would you like me to come and pick you up at seven?”
“Sounds good to me. See you then Joe.” Violet was so excited she could hardly control herself. She decided not to tell Marco or Catherine that she was going out with Joe. They would be out for the night by the time Joe came back anyway.
Joe knocked on Marco and Catherine’s door for the second time that day. Eva answered that door and let him in. She told him that Marco and Catherine were already out for the evening and that Violet would be down in a minute. Violet came down a few minutes later.
“She looks beautiful like always.” Joe thought to himself as he offered Violet his arm and they left.
After going to dinner and the shops, Joe and Violet went to the docks to enjoy the view.
“It’s so beautiful.” Violet said gazing out into the black and silver sky.
“Yes it is.” Joe replied, never taking his eyes off of Violet. Violet felt his eyes on her and blushed.
“I think this is my favorite place in Port Charles…especially when I’m with you.”
“This place always was nice to me, but now, with you, it’s so much more.” Joe took a step closer to Violet and put a hand to her cheek. He pulled her closer until they could almost feel each others heart beats. Joe closed the gap between them and their lips met. The tender kiss was wonderful. It sent shivers down both of their spines. Violet’s knees went weak. Joe caught her and wrapped his arms around her and went in for another kiss. This time the kiss was longer and more passionate.
“Well, well, well,…you run away for only two weeks and you’re already kissing another man?” a man broke the two away from their kiss.
“Murphy.” Violet said, scared. Joe looked at her with concern.
“That’s Murphy? That scum that scared such an angel?” Joe thought to himself.
“What? No nice to see you honey?” Murphy asked sarcastically.
“You stay away from me! I want nothing to do with you!” Violet said, her confidence raising with Joe by her side.
“So who’s your boyfriend gorgeous? Not that I care really. In fact I never quite cared about you at all. You see I used you to get to your brother Marco. You were so stupid and easy to fool. My plan was to marry you and than I would take back the Waterfront he stole from me.”
“Too bad for you I wised up! Now you still can’t have the Waterfront! I’m not as dumb as you think. Go back to California, nobody wants you here.” Violet said, not letting the tears she had in hers eyes fall.
“Oh, I think I’ll stay for a while. I like it here. It makes me see what I’ll get back once I take care of Marco.” Murphy said with an evil grin.
“You touch Marco, Violet, or anyone close to me, your dead. That’s a promise.” Joe told Murphy, his eyes icy. He took a hold of Violets hand and led her away from the docks and Murphy.
When they finally reached Marco and Catherine’s apartment, Violet turned to say goodnight.
“Thank you for tonight. I had a wonderful time, well mostly.” Violet said with a weak smile.
“I’m sorry he had to ruin the night for us. I promise you though, he will never hurt you again.”
“I know. I feel so safe with you. You’ll never let him or anyone else for that matter hurt me.” Joe wrapped his arms around Violet and just held her for a while. Violet yawned.
“You better get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Joe said, letting go of her.
“Promise?”
“I couldn’t stay away from you if I tried.” Joe replied. They gazed into each other’s eyes and Joe kissed Violet tenderly.
”Goodnight.” Joe said, than turned and walked away.
“Goodnight.”
Joe and Violet continued to date. Violet and Joe decided that it was best to just appear to be friends and nothing more around Marco. Little did they know that Marco knew and was just waiting for the right time to talk to them about it, but one night after a date, Marco had had enough and he exploded.
When Violet walked through the door, Marco was sitting on the couch.
“Marco?” Violet asked, a little scared.
“I don’t want you with Joe! He isn’t good for you! This-this life,…you have to stay as far away from it as you can.” Marco said.
“How can I stay away from it if I’m your sister?!” Violet replied, angry.
“We can’t help that you’re my blood, but being with Joe just makes it worse!”
“No! He can protect me Marco. He won’t let anything happen to me.” Violet said.
“I don’t want your heart to be broken.” Marco said.
“Than let me be with Joe, Marco. That’s the only way it’s not going to be broken. I-I love him Marco.” Violet said.
“I don’t like it, that’s all I’m going to say…I don’t like it.” Marco told Violet and went upstairs.
