Chapter 4
All of the dialogue is from the actual New Year’s Eppy.
It was New Year’s Eve and Joe and Violet had decided that at the stroke of midnight, they would cut out of the speak-easy and go to Niagara Falls to marry. That was all Joe was thinking about that day. Violet snuck up behind Joe and put her hands in front of his eyes.
“Am I supposed to guess?” Joe asked, already knowing who was there.
“Mm-hmm.” Violet said, smiling.
“Clara Bow.”
“No.”
“Mary Pickford.”
“No, and it’s not Greta Garbo either.”
“Hmm. Wait, I think I recognize the voice. It’s Violet.” Joe finally said, and kissed her.
“You look beautiful, like always.” Joe said.
“And you look like you want to rip that suit right off your back, like always.” Violet replied with a smile.
“Yeah.”
“ Hold still, let me fix your tie.” Violet pulled Joe towards her and straightened his tie.
“Yeah, whoever thought it was a good idea to wear a noose around their neck?” Joe asked, obviously annoyed at his attire.
“Oh, some woman who noticed how good her man looked, like you. You look dreamy.” Violet replied, gazing into his eyes.
“Hmm, ok.”
“Let’s leave, right now.” Violet wanted to be Joe’s wife so badly.
“What?”
“Let’s forget about the club opening. Let’s forget about everything and everybody. We’ll just hop in the car and we’ll drive until we get to the justice of the peace in Niagara falls.” Violet said, pleadingly.
“Wait, you want to elope right now?” Joe asked, surprised. He had to admit to himself though, he thought it was a wonderful idea.
“This minute.”
“We can’t.”
“Give me one good reason why not.” Violet already knew the answer though.
“I’ll give you three good reasons why. Marco’s your brother, he’s my boss, and opening this club is very important to Catherine.” Joe replied. Violet sighed. She knew he was right. She just loved him so much.
“We have to be there.”
“Well, maybe Marco will be so involved he won’t even notice we’re missing.” Violet tried her last ditch effort.
“He’ll notice. And it’s not a smart thing to start our married life on his bad side.” Joe said.
“Ok. But as soon as the clock strikes midnight-“ Violet started.
“Niagara Falls here we come.” Joe replied. Violet smiled and he picked her up in a huge hug. He couldn’t wait until they were married. He just knew that their life would be perfect.
Chapter 5
Joe had a heart to heart with Marco and Joe knew that once Marco knew that he and Violet were married, he’d give his blessing. As Joe and Marco talked, Violet told Catherine of her and Joe’s plans. Catherine thought it was the best thing ever and told Violet to leave Marco to her. He would approve.
The night was going smoothly. The only problem so far was that Murphy came in and tried to start trouble with Marco and Joe. For the first time that night, Violet, Joe, Catherine, and Marco had a bad feeling. The feeling was fleeting thought and the party continued. Violet visited with her father for a bit before Joe stole her away for a dance.
“Got the Packard gassed and ready. It’s your last chance if you want to get out of this.”
“That’ll never happen.” Violet said with love flowing in her eyes.
“Something’s bothering you. What is it?” Joe didn’t want anything to be wrong with his wife to be.
“Not us. It’s Marco. I was wondering if we should tell him we were getting married tonight.”
“He’s got enough on his plate. We’ll tell him with everyone else.” Joe replied, telling the truth, plus he just wasn’t sure yet how Marco was going to feel and he didn’t want anything to stop them from getting married.
“He’ll be happy for us, won’t he?” Violet asked, uncertain.
“Sure he will.” Joe told Violet reassuring her.
The night continued, their was only another hour before the strike of midnight. Joe and Violet were dancing when Joe interrupted their peaceful silence.
“You know I’m not good at fancy words. You remember how long it took me to tell you how much I love you?”
“Well, it was worth the wait.” Violet replied, not sure of what Joe was going to say next.
“You changed everything for me Violet. I love you so much.”
“I love you too.”
Marco and Catherine had been watching Joe and Violet dance.
”They look so happy don’t they?” Catherine asked, already starting her strategy on how to get Marco to accept Joe and Violet’s marriage.
“Like newlyweds.” Marco replied, already knowing.
“You know?” Catherine was surprised, yet so happy that he didn’t seem angry.
“Nothing gets by me.” Marco replied, he knew he couldn’t fight destiny.
“Your not upset?” Catherine asked, smiling.
“Do I look upset?” Marco questioned with a smile.
“No and I’m shocked.”
“I know it took me a long time to accept my baby sister with Joe. I want her to be safe, but Joe’s the best friend I ever had. They’re in love, and I’m happy.” Marco had made peace with his tensions.
Paul stood on the stage and announced that there was only ten seconds left of 1926.
“Let’s count it down everyone! 10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1! Happy New Year!” All of a sudden there were shots ringing out and everyone went down to the ground. Murphy and his men ran out as soon as they were done the shooting. When the commotion was over, everyone started to get up, but Joe remained down.
“Joe? Oh my God! Please God! No, don’t-don’t die on me Joe! No, Don’t die Joe!” Violet cried to Joe, knowing that her soul mate was dieing in her loving arms.
“I-I-I love-I love you.” Joe said with his last breath, taking one last look into Violets eyes. The two sets of blue eyes met for one last time before Joe’s eyes closed.
“No! No! No!” Violet couldn’t breathe. She couldn’t feel anything but loneliness.
The world turned upside down for the family that New Year’s Eve. Marco was never the same. He got his revenge and killed Marco. He didn’t even try to run. He just waited to be taken away by the police. Catherine couldn’t live her life the way she was supposed to without Marco, so she gave up Michael so he could have a good life. Violet couldn’t live her life without Joe. She was taken away one day and she died of a broken heart. Joe was her heart, and he was the heart of the whole family. Joe and Violet’s love was their destiny. It wasn’t supposed to end on that New Year’s night. Destiny has to complete it’s Journey. It has to find two new sets of blue eyes to find its happy ending.
